In the splendid setting of the Hotel Principe di Savoia, Daniele Cernilli created a small tasting counter with some of the almost 400 wines he reviewed in his new wine guide dedicated to the perfect wine for summer. After the presentation of the Essential Guide to the Wines of Italy 2024 by Doctor Wine where I tasted someexcellent Friulian white wine and the supertuscan and the presentation of the wines for all budgets 2024here are my tasting notes of the best white wines that I liked best about the guide wines for summer 2024.

Tasting #1: 'Brianello' Marche IGT 2023, Il Pollenza

100% sauvignon blanc | cement | € 19

It presents itself pale straw yellow with greenish highlights, consistent. The nose is delicate, not very complex, but elegant and fine with notes of orange blossom, elderflower and passion fruit. In the mouth it is consistent, fresh, very savoury, with a tea-like finish and a pleasant drinkability.

Tasting #2: "Anas-cëtta" Langhe DOC Nascetta from Novello 2022, Elvio Cogno

100% nascetta | steel and second-stage wood | € 20

It presents itself pale straw yellow, consistent. The nose is characteristic with notes of camphor, wild flowers, white pepper and cedar. In the mouth it is consistent, soft, structured and very pleasant.

Tasting #3: 'Tino' Vermentino di Sardegna DOC 2022, Mora & Memo

100% vermentino | steel | € 15

It presents itself pale straw yellow, consistent. Very delicate nose, with notes of white flowers, ripe pear, herbs. On the palate it is soft, savoury, structured, long with a nice brackish finish.

Tasting #4: 'Il Pecorino' Abruzzo DOC 2022, San Lorenzo Vini

100% pecorino | steel | € 10

It presents itself straw yellow with greenish hues, consistent. The nose is delicate with notes of pink pepper, juniper and coriander. On the palate it is consistent, fresh, warm, slightly savoury, structured and with good drinkability.

Tasting #5: 'Lafóa' Alto Adige DOC Chardonnay 2022, Colterenzio ❤️❤️❤️

100% chardonnay | 10 months in barrique | € 26

It presents itself brilliant straw yellow with green-gold highlights, consistent. The nose is intense and characteristic with notes of vanilla, candied pear, banana ice cream and ripe white peach. In the mouth it is consistent, round, savoury, structured, balanced and very long.

Tasting #6: 'Filare 23' Toscana IGT 2023, Tenuta Casadei ❤️+

100% viognier | 7 months in tonneau and barrique | € 35

It presents itself straw yellow and bright, consistent. The nose is intense and pleasant with notes of butter, lime blossom, candied citron and a smoky accent. In the mouth it is consistent, savoury, soft, structured and round. Very long.

Tasting #7: 'MAT' Valcamonica white IGT 2019, Cantina Concarena ❤️❤️+

70% Rhine Riesling, 30% Sauvignon Blanc | steel | € 40

It presents itself brilliant straw yellow, consistent. The nose is very hydrocarbon with a powerful petrol note. In the mouth it enters coherent, structured savoury with a citrusy finish.

(I hope the brand and marketing suicide of coming up with such a label is only temporary...)

Tasting #8: 'Tricur' Oltrepò Pavese DOC 2018, Monviert ❤️❤️

It presents itself deep, bright straw yellow, consistent. Intense, broad and elegant nose with notes of candied lemon, hydrocarbons, lime and dandelion flowers, sweet spices. In the mouth it is consistent, enveloping, soft, warm, savoury, structured and very long.

Best monviert white wines

Better white wines of course, but red wines are also drunk in summer

I thought of this article as a Grand Tour of Italian white wine starting in northern Italy and ending in Sardinia. Yet despite the fact that the summer season is mainly dedicated to white, sparkling and rosé wines, a good sommelier should push the consumption of red wines. This is because in Italy - and not only here - we tend to drink this type of wine at too high a temperature, the famous 'room temperature'. But if it is 30 °C or more in summer, it is normal that these wines cannot be appreciated as they deserve. Sommeliers have studied serving temperatures and know that red wine is best enjoyed at a temperature of 16-20 °C, and serving them correctly conveys this message.

I want to thank once again Daniele Cernilli Doctor Wine for his work and commitment to please everyone... from the supertuscan to those looking for a excellent Friulian white wine or a daily winegood and reasonably priced. A sommelier in principle likes to uncork one less but better bottle... but if he can uncork one more good bottle because it doesn't cost a fortune, he is even happier!
