Many sommeliers and restaurateurs are looking for a excellent Friulian white wine to enjoy or to put on the menu at the restaurant. After all, Friuli-Venezia Giulia is one of the Italian regions most suitable for the production of white wines with extraordinary aromas and a great capacity for ageing. In particular the Friulian wines express themselves in an interesting way with regard to international varieties such as the pinot blanc and the sauvignon blancnative grape varieties such as the picolit and the yellow ribolla. During the presentation of the Essential Guide to the Wines of Italy 2024 by Daniele Cernilli Several Friulian white wines were tasted and in this article I report my tasting notes of those I liked best.

Tasting #1: Albino Armani | Friuli DOC Ribolla Gialla Spumante Brut classic method 2016 (disgorgement spring 2020) ❤️❤️

It presents itself pale straw yellow, brilliant with a fine, numerous and persistent perlage. Intense nose with aromatic herbs and yellow flowers that blend into a delicate brioche bun. In the mouth it enters with a pleasantly crisp bubble, very fresh, very structured and well balanced. Long finish with an almondy note.

It is pale straw yellow and bright, consistent. The nose is intense and characteristic of the variety with notes of green pepper, boxwood, pineapple, green tea and myrrh. In the mouth it is very fresh, structured, quite savoury and has an excellent drinkability with a finish reminiscent of incense.

Friulian white wine: a sommelier's paradise

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a border region nestled between the mountains - the stunning Friulian Dolomites - and the Adriatic Sea, and for this reason it enjoys a unique climate. With a culture closer to the European than to the Italian one, which is also reflected in the cuisine, it is the ideal place for a taste trip. Every sommelier and wine lover from anywhere in the world should visit it at least once to discover its incredible castles overlooking the sea, its beautiful vineyards tended like English gardens and, of course, its excellent white wines from Friuli... but also reds. Friuli-Venezia Giulia, in fact, is also a land of great red wines from those somewhat difficult grapes such as pinot noir, or from those almost completely forgotten indigenous grapes such as piculit neri.
