Supertuscan are defined as tuscan wines 'legendary', but in reality they are those Tuscan red wines that purposely do not comply with the DOC and DOCG specifications while striving for exceptional quality. In the 1980s the journalist and English Master of Wine Nicholas Belfrage coined this term, which was soon picked up by the local and international press and became the symbol of a type of wine capable of breaking down labels and making its way onto the oenological Olympus. Daniele Cernilli, on the occasion of the presentation of his Essential Guide to the Wines of Italy 2024held a masterclass on 13 Supertuscan Tuscan wines that deserve to be tasted at least once in a lifetime.

Supertuscan: Daniele Cernilli's TOP Tuscan wines

[Below are my tasting notes, the fruit of my experience and sensitivity and therefore shareable or not by other enthusiasts and experts in the field. As always, constructive comments are welcome].

Tuscan wine tasting #1: Podere Monastero | "La Pineta" Toscana IGT Pinot Nero 2021

It is transparent ruby red, consistent. The nose is delicate and complex, with a woody yet well-dosed presence. One recognises notes of blood orange, very ripe currants, medicinal herbs, vanilla and black pepper. In the mouth it enters with tannin that is barely noticeable, but with a high acidity that makes you salivate a lot. Consistent, warm and structured, it has a long fruity finish.

Tuscan wine tasting #2: Principe Corsini - Villa Le Corti | "Per Filo" Toscana IGT Sangiovese 2022 ❤️

It has a transparent, consistent ruby red colour. The nose is intense and complex with notes of rhubarb, wild strawberry, cherries under spirits and a hint of undergrowth. On the palate it is consistent, very savoury, structured and shifted to hardness also because it potentially has many years ahead of it.

Tuscan wine tasting #3: Vallepiccola | Toscana IGT Sangiovese 2020

It has a very concentrated, consistent ruby red colour. The nose is intense and complex with notes of black mulberry, porcini mushroom and violet. In the mouth it enters coherently, with very soft tannins, very fresh, structured and warm. It makes you salivate, but less so than the first wine tasted. Long finish.

Tuscan wine tasting #4: Tenute Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari | "Cabreo Mytho" Toscana IGT Sangiovese 2019 ❤️++

It is barely transparent ruby red with garnet hues at the edges, consistent. Very intense and very interesting nose with officinal notes, rhubarb, gentian, cinchona and orange. In the mouth it is consistent and powerful and acquires a roasted flavour reminiscent of coffee that continues on the rather long finish.

Tuscan wine tasting #5: Castellare di Castellina | "I sodi di San Niccolò" Toscana IGT 2019

It is a barely transparent ruby red, consistent. The nose is very delicate with an unwelcome 'wardrobe' note that is unfortunately not the fault of the glass. It is also unexciting in the mouth: the big acidic shoulder is not supported by overall power and the finish is not long enough.

Tuscan wine tasting #6: Antinori | "Tignanello" Toscana IGT 2020 ❤️

It has an impenetrable, consistent ruby red colour. The nose is intense and broad, with notes of chocolate, vanilla, fresh cherry and black pepper. In the mouth it is consistent, fresh, with well-blended tannins, structured and with a long finish. Suitable for very long ageing.

Tuscan wine tasting #7: Castello Vicchiomaggio | "FSM" Toscana IGT 2019 +

It is a barely transparent ruby red, consistent. The nose is intense and ample with notes of liquorice, raspberry, currant and herbs. In the mouth it is consistent, very soft, structured and with a great acidic backbone and well-blended tannins. Very long finish.

Tuscan wine tasting #8: Tua Rita | 'Redigaffi' Toscana IGT Merlot ❤️❤️❤️

It is intense ruby red, almost impenetrable and consistent. The nose is crazy: intense, elegant, broad and fine. Well-mixed wood notes give hints of vanilla and cinnamon that are enriched by scents of dried roses, violets and cocoa. In the mouth it enters coherently, soft, fresh, well-balanced and very long.

Tuscan wine tasting #9: Fattoria Le Pupille | "Saffredi" Toscana Rosso IGT 2020 ❤️❤️

It has an almost impenetrable, consistent ruby red colour. The nose is intense and broad with notes of jammy red fruits, vanilla and cinnamon. In the mouth it is powerful, structured and very long.

Tuscan wine tasting #10: Tenuta Sette Ponti | 'Oreno' Toscana IGT Rosso 2021

It is intense ruby red with violet hues, consistent. The nose is intense, but there is a very pronounced animal scent that covers everything else - it seems almost like dung - unpleasant. In the mouth it is (unfortunately) consistent.

Tuscan wine tasting #11: Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara | 'Bacicolo' Toscana IGT Cabernet 2020

It is semi-transparent ruby red, consistent. The nose is not very distinctive as a cabernet franc, lacking the vine's own notes for a dominance of spices and fruit, albeit pleasant and integral. It seems a little too pandering and tamed cabernet franc. In the mouth it enters coherently, a little too light and almost salty. Discreetly long finish.

Tuscan wine tasting #12: Podere Forte | "Guardavigna" Toscana IGT Cabernet Franc 2019

It is intense and consistent ruby red. As with the previous one, I read a desire to pander to a grape variety that demands greater respect, at least for the great fans of the genre. Without misunderstanding, the nose is fine and pleasant, only shifted to less characteristic and more 'international' scents. In the mouth it enters coherently, soft, fresh, structured and with a long finish.

Tuscan wine tasting #13: Castello del Terriccio | "Lupicaia" Toscana IGT Rosso 2018 ❤️

It is almost impenetrable ruby red, consistent. Very charming nose with a hint of henna and chocolate, medicinal herbs and flowers. In the mouth it is consistent, intense, very tannic, soft, structured and with a very long finish.

Supertuscan Masterclass Daniele Cernilli: my opinion

First of all, I want to thank Daniele Cernilli - Doctor Wine for giving me the opportunity to discover new wines that I did not know in an undoubtedly fascinating journey that deserved to be experienced. These Supertuscan Tuscan wines almost all of them proved to be level-headed partners in the culture of their speaker. As for me, as I have been doing for 9 years now, I am happy to give you my tastings totally free and independent of economic and brand interests. I hope, as always, to have given you ideas to enrich your cellar.
