That is why a restaurant like Trattoria Masuelli San Marco is particularly valuable: its delicious dishes bear witness to a cuisine that knows how to comfort after a long day's work. The philosophy of hospitality gives life to a magical, living, vital and enjoyable tale. It can be read in the gestures and words of the people, it can be spotted in the mise en place where the superb white tablecloths stand out, it can be grasped in the enveloping light of the Venini 1930s chandeliers signed by Gio' Ponti, it can be experienced on the original Thonet chairs from the 1920s, it can be scrolled on the walls with wood panelling where photos, international awards and dedications by writers, gourmets and historical food and wine writers tell of a journey in the making.

The wide selection of Champagnes divided by area and offered at an excellent price is very much appreciated. The entire wine list in general is just right for the type of restaurant: 13 Italian sparkling wines, 43 Italian white wines, 11 white wines from the rest of the world, 153 red wines of which 90 from Piedmont divided by type (Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, Barbaresco, Barolo and wines from other grapes), 20 red wines from the rest of the world, and then again sweet wines, liqueurs and spirits. This list, from the way it is written to the choice of wineries, testifies to intelligence, foresight and great wine culture.

Fried calf's brains

Wonderful. Creamy, melting and fried to perfection. Perfectly attached to the breadcrumbs, which did not turn out greasy at all. They alone are worth trying this restaurant.

Typical Milanese meatballs stuffed with meat and fried to perfection. Historically, they were made with leftover meat - mainly beef - and bread to which mortadella, sausage, egg and spices were added, then breaded and fried in butter.

Perfect enjoyed with a sauce reminiscent of a light mayonnaise enriched with herbs.

Risotto Milanese style

The portion - fortunately - is not excessively large. Someone will find it perfect, someone else will wish for more. However, Massimiliano Masuelli should take this as a compliment: it is really good and the saffron is very noticeable! Prepared on the wave, perhaps a hair slow.

Milanese cutlet

More than a Milanese schnitzel, this is a work of art. Although I prefer it smaller and thicker with a pink interior, the 'traditional' one in short, I also really enjoyed this modern elephant ear one. Large in size, yet not too thin and therefore nice and meltable. Cooked to perfection in butter and as witnessed by the meat perfectly stuck to the breadcrumbs enriched with panko to increase the crispiness.

Mascarpone cream, cat's tongues

The wonderful thing about mascarpone cream is that it combines the whole of northern Italy with its sweetness. It is particularly soft and the flavour is delicious. Enjoy the cat tongues, which are well executed and perfect for dipping into the cream.

Langhe bonet with macaroons, dehydrated raspberry and caramel

The intuition of combining the bonet with dehydrated raspberry is excellent: it gives a touch of acidity that refreshes the full, enveloping chocolate flavour. A little firmer than it should have been, but still tasty.

Overall, this restaurant is very good value for money and you can enjoy authentic Milanese cuisine while spending the right amount. The fried calf's brains (16 €) is a generous starter that you can easily split in two if you also have a first course such as risotto alla milanese (18 €) and a second course such as costoletta alla milanese (33 €, but you have to eat it with two people... or if you are alone you only have to order that). Desserts are perhaps the thing with a slightly less popular price since they cost 9 € and are really very simple.
